Investigation Launched into Toxic Gas Leak from Dhanbad Mines; Residents to be Relocated

Probe Ordered into ‘Poisonous Gas Leak’ from Underground Mines in Dhanbad; Locals to Shift

In a significant move to safeguard public health, the Jharkhand district administration of Dhanbad has initiated a comprehensive investigation following alarming reports of a “poisonous gas leak” from nearby underground mines. On Thursday, December 4, 2025, officials stated that the Bharat Coking Coal Limited (BCCL) was instructed to relocate approximately 1,000 residents from the area, emphasizing the urgency of the situation.

Health Crisis Unfolds

The crisis escalated on December 3, when a tragic incident resulted in the death of a woman, while 12 others fell ill due to suspected exposure to carbon monoxide emanating from the mines in Kenduadih Basti. As reports filtered in regarding residents experiencing symptoms like vomiting, headaches, and breathlessness, the situation came under intense scrutiny from health and administrative authorities.

While the woman’s passing was a distressing development, officials have stated that the exact cause of her death has yet to be confirmed, pending the completion of a postmortem examination.

Immediate Actions Taken by Authorities

In light of these developments, Dhanbad Deputy Commissioner (DC) Aditya Ranjan has taken swift action, ordering an in-depth probe into the source of the gas leak. Ranjan stressed the importance of immediate relocation for the residents, ensuring their safety ahead of the inquiry results.

“Based on the probe report, action will be taken against responsible persons,” said DC Ranjan during a press conference. He convened an emergency meeting with key stakeholders, including representatives from BCCL, the Directorate General of Mines Safety (DGMS), health officials, the disaster management department, and the Jharia Rehabilitation Authority (JRDA), to address the crisis.

Evacuation and Relocation Efforts

In response to the emergency, BCCL promptly commenced the evacuation of residents from what authorities have designated as a ‘danger zone,’ an area notorious for underground mine fires. Notices have been distributed to residents, urging them to vacate their homes as soon as possible.

DC Ranjan has directed BCCL to establish a temporary tent city to accommodate those displaced from Kenduadih Basti, ensuring all basic necessities—including food and blankets—are provided for the relocated families.

G.C. Saha, General Manager of BCCL’s Putki-Balihati Colliery Area, reassured the public that three ambulances remain on standby to address any health emergencies. “The company is making arrangements to shift the residents to safer places. For the safety of life and property, we have already requested them to leave the dangerous zone,” stated Mr. Saha.

Addressing the Gas Leak

Officials from BCCL confirmed that measures have been enacted to seal leakage points contributing to the gas emissions, in a bid to prevent any further health complications among the residents. This proactive approach was initiated immediately after the reports of health issues were documented on the evening of December 3.

Statistical Overview

The ongoing safety concerns in this region are underscored by a 2019 survey which indicated that around 946 families reside in areas susceptible to underground mine fires and subsidence, particularly within the Jharia coalfield.

As the investigation progresses, officials urge all residents to heed safety directives and remain vigilant about their health. The community’s well-being hinges on both immediate action and a thorough investigation into the underlying causes of the toxic gas leak.
