The makers announced the delay on Wednesday evening, with the Vijay-starrer now awaiting censor clearance and no new release date in sight.
The release of Jana Nayagan, starring Vijay, has officially been postponed, throwing the carefully planned Pongal weekend strategy into temporary disarray. The film, which was scheduled to hit theatres worldwide on January 9, has been delayed due to pending certification from the Central Board of Film Certification (CBFC).
On Wednesday evening, the film’s production banner KVN Productions confirmed the postponement via social media, citing “unavoidable circumstances beyond our control.” The announcement came just hours after the Madras High Court reserved its order on a petition challenging the CBFC’s decision to withhold the censor certificate.
As per submissions in court, while four members of the examining committee recommended a U/A 16+ certificate, a dissenting member raised objections, prompting the matter to be escalated to the revising committee. With the court stating that its verdict would be pronounced only on January 9, the original release date, the film was left stuck in a bureaucratic pause that no amount of background score could speed up.
The postponement has had a significant financial ripple effect, with advance bookings worth approximately ₹42 crore reportedly refunded worldwide. Not exactly the kind of box-office opening makers hope for, even before the opening credits roll.
Directed by H Vinoth, Jana Nayagan also stars Pooja Hegde and Bobby Deol. The film carries additional significance as it is being widely viewed as Vijay’s final film before his proposed political entry with Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam.
With Jana Nayagan stepping aside, Parasakthi, starring Sivakarthikeyan, now stands as the sole Tamil release on January 9, while competition from The Raja Saab remains on the horizon. For now, fans will have to wait, because even mass cinema isn’t immune to paperwork.
