Big Change in CBSE Board Exams: Class 12 Answer Sheets to Be Checked Digitally

The Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) has announced a major reform in its examination evaluation system. Starting with the 2026 board examinations, CBSE will introduce On-Screen Marking (OSM) for Class 12 answer sheets, marking a significant move towards digitisation and efficiency.

It is important to note that Class 10 answer sheet evaluation will continue in physical (offline) mode, while the new digital system will be implemented only for Class 12.

With nearly 46 lakh students appearing for CBSE board exams every year, this change is being seen as a long-term structural upgrade in how assessments are handled.

What Is On-Screen Marking (OSM)?

On-Screen Marking is a digital evaluation system where:

  • Answer sheets are scanned
  • Evaluators assess responses on a computer screen
  • Marks are entered directly into the system

This eliminates the need for physical answer books to be transported to evaluation centres and reduces manual processes.

Why CBSE Is Introducing OSM for Class 12

CBSE’s decision is driven by the need to:

  • Improve accuracy in evaluation
  • Speed up result processing
  • Reduce logistical challenges
  • Increase transparency

Class 12 examinations involve complex, subject-intensive evaluation, making them ideal for a technology-supported marking system.

Key Benefits of On-Screen Marking

1. No Off-Totaling Errors

Since marks are calculated digitally, manual totaling mistakes are eliminated completely.

2. Faster and Smoother Evaluation

Automated coordination and reduced paperwork allow for quicker assessment, helping CBSE declare results faster.

3. Reduced Manual Intervention

The system minimizes human errors linked to data entry, mark transfer, and result compilation.

4. Teachers Can Evaluate from Their Own Schools

Teachers will no longer need to travel to distant evaluation centres.

  • They can stay in their own schools
  • Continue regular teaching duties
  • Save time, energy, and travel costs

5. Wider Participation of Teachers

OSM allows more teachers from more schools to participate in evaluation, ensuring balanced workload and fairness.

6. No Need for Post-Result Verification

Since totaling and mark entry are automated, post-result verification of marks will no longer be required, reducing stress for students and parents.

7. Reduced Manpower Requirement

Digital processes lower dependence on large administrative teams traditionally required during evaluation.

8. Opportunity for All Schools to Contribute

Even schools in remote areas can become part of the evaluation process, promoting inclusivity.

9. Environment-Friendly Evaluation

With reduced paper handling, transportation, and physical infrastructure, OSM supports environmentally sustainable practices.

What About Class 10 Students?

CBSE has clarified that:

  • Class 10 evaluation will continue in physical mode
  • No change has been announced yet for Class 10 answer sheet checking

This phased approach allows the board to implement and stabilise the system effectively.

What This Means for Students

For Class 12 students appearing in 2026 and beyond:

  • Faster result processing
  • More accurate marking
  • Fewer chances of clerical errors
  • Reduced anxiety around rechecking and verification

Conclusion

CBSE’s move to introduce On-Screen Marking for Class 12 exams from 2026 reflects a broader push towards digital transformation in education. By improving accuracy, efficiency, and transparency—while also reducing teacher burden and environmental impact—this reform is expected to modernise the board examination system in a meaningful way.

While Class 10 exams will continue with traditional evaluation for now, Class 12 students are set to experience a more streamlined and reliable assessment process in the coming years.
