Why Varun Chakarboty is not effective in this World Cup 2026 till date

While Varun Chakravarthy enters the 2026 T20 World Cup semifinals as one of India’s leading wicket-takers, his perceived “ineffectiveness” stems from a sharp decline in performance when facing top-tier opposition compared to his dominance in the group stages.

The “Two Halves” of His Tournament

Statistically, Chakravarthy is the fourth-highest wicket-taker in the tournament with 12 wickets in 7 matches. However, a closer look at the data reveals why his impact is being questioned:

  • Group Stage Success: He dominated early on, picking up 6 of his 12 wickets against Namibia and the Netherlands. During this phase, his economy rate was a stifling 5.16.
  • Super 8 Struggle: Against stronger teams like South Africa, Zimbabwe, and the West Indies, his economy rate nearly doubled to 10.25.
  • Expensive Spells: He has conceded significant runs in crucial matches, including 1/47 against South Africa and 1/40 against the West Indies.

Why Top Batters Have “Decoded” Him

Technical adjustments and increased familiarity have allowed world-class batters to handle his mystery more comfortably:

  • Trade-off for Bounce: Over the last three years, Chakravarthy shifted from side-spin to over-spin to generate more bounce. While this provides bounce, it has significantly reduced the amount of horizontal turn (deviation) he gets off the pitch.
  • Trusting the Line: Batters like David Miller and Glenn Phillips have noted that because the ball isn’t spinning much, they can “trust the line” and attack him even when not perfectly at the pitch of the ball.
  • Predictability: Anil Kumble pointed out that Chakravarthy is bowling too many deliveries that spin into the batter. Without the threat of the ball consistently moving away, right-handed batters can more easily line him up for shots over the leg side.
  • Fearless Approach: Modern batters are increasingly willing to take risks against him. In seven matches, he has already been hit for nine sixes, as opponents are no longer content just playing him safely.

Moving Forward

Despite these struggles, the Indian team management remains supportive, with bowling coach Morne Morkel describing him as a “match-winner” who is just one execution away from regaining his strike-force status. Ahead of the semifinal at Wankhede, he has been seen working on “angles” and spot-bowling outside off-stump to regain the deviation that over-spin alone cannot provide.
