Chief Minister Assures Women Employees of Declaring September 13 as ‘Women Employees’ Day
In a significant gesture towards women’s empowerment, Chief Minister Siddaramaiah announced on Thursday that the State government will officially declare September 13 as “Women Employees’ Day.” This proclamation aims to acknowledge and celebrate the vital contributions made by women employees in the administration of the State. The announcement was made during a women’s conference organized by the Akhila Karnataka Rajya Sarkari Mahila Noukarara Sangha in Bengaluru.
Supporting Women’s Health and Welfare
During his address, the Chief Minister revealed that the government has approved a one-day paid menstrual leave policy for women employees each month. This landmark decision underscores the government’s recognition of women’s health needs and aims to foster a supportive work environment. Additionally, discussions are currently in progress regarding the provision of office space for the women’s association at Bal Bhavan, further solidifying the government’s commitment to supporting women’s organizations.
Commitment to Gender Equality
Reaffirming the government’s dedication to eradicating gender discrimination, Mr. Siddaramaiah emphasized that women officials are now serving equivalently alongside their male counterparts across various government departments. He stated, “Our government is committed to equal treatment and inclusivity,” reflecting a broader agenda of promoting gender equality in the workplace.
Promoting Rational Thinking and Scientific Temper
In a thought-provoking part of his speech, the Chief Minister highlighted the necessity of instilling a scientific temper and rational thinking among children. He urged women to take the initiative in combating deep-seated superstitions and blind beliefs that still prevail in society. Mr. Siddaramaiah called upon parents and teachers to engage in building awareness among children, emphasizing the importance of nurturing a progressive mindset right from an early age.
The Chief Minister lamented that despite the tremendous advancements in literacy—rising from 10-12% at the time of Independence to nearly 78% today—many educated individuals remain influenced by superstitions. He stated, “Only when we cultivate rational thinking can we build a healthy, egalitarian society,” citing initiatives such as the ongoing practice of reading the Preamble to the Constitution in schools and colleges as critical steps towards fostering critical thinking among students.
Effective Women’s Empowerment Initiatives
Highlighting the government’s initiatives for women’s empowerment, Mr. Siddaramaiah reported that approximately 3.5 crore women are beneficiaries of the Shakti scheme. This program, which provides free bus travel, aims to alleviate the financial burden on households and enhance mobility for women. Quoting Dr. B.R. Ambedkar, he asserted that women must be socially and economically empowered to achieve true freedom.
Call to Action for Women Employees
Concluding his address, Mr. Siddaramaiah urged women employees to actively contribute to enhancing the efficiency and quality of governance in the State. He believes that their involvement is crucial for driving positive change and fostering a more inclusive administration. Through these various initiatives, the Chief Minister aims to create a more equitable society where women can thrive and lead in every realm of public life.
