Inferno in Hong Kong’s Tai Po District: 13 Dead, Hundreds Evacuated as Massive Fire Rages Through Residential Estate

A devastating fire swept through the Wang Fuk Court residential complex in Hong Kong’s Tai Po district on Wednesday, leaving at least 13 people dead and 15 others injured. The blaze, classified as a level-5 fire, the city’s most serious category, continued burning late into the night as firefighters struggled to contain the flames ripping across multiple apartment blocks.

A Night of Despair and Destruction

Videos circulating online showed thick plumes of black smoke rising from the high-rise buildings, where bamboo scaffolding quickly caught fire and accelerated the spread. Residents made frantic calls saying they were trapped, as fire engulfed several towers of the estate—which houses nearly 4,600 people.

More than 700 firefighters and dozens of fire trucks were deployed. Despite their efforts, the fast-moving flames claimed numerous lives, including 37-year-old firefighter Ho Wai-ho, who collapsed during the rescue operation and later died in hospital. The Hong Kong government described him as “dedicated and gallant.”

Chaos, Fear, and a Community in Shock

As night fell, the fire continued burning, with bright orange flames still visible inside individual apartments. Thousands of residents were evacuated to temporary shelters at community halls and a nearby school.

Local councillors reported receiving numerous distress calls from people who had lost contact with relatives stuck inside the buildings. Many stood on nearby streets, staring helplessly at the inferno.

Some young locals arrived at the scene with blankets, heat packs, and emergency supplies, expressing heartbreak and frustration. “We don’t want to see more casualties,” one said, hoping every firefighter returns safely.

City Responds with Unity and Mourning

Hong Kong’s Education Bureau announced that several schools in the Tai Po area would remain closed on Thursday, and counsellors were dispatched to shelters to support traumatised students and families.

Political parties suspended their LegCo election campaigning, calling for unity as the city grapples with the unfolding tragedy.

Chinese President Xi Jinping expressed condolences over the loss of life, as authorities continue investigating the cause of the blaze.

Unanswered Questions Remain

With the fire still active late Wednesday night, the full extent of the damage remains unknown. Officials have not confirmed how many people may still be trapped inside the affected buildings.

As firefighters continue battling the massive blaze, Hong Kong watches in grief and anxiety—hoping the worst does not grow even darker.
