What began as an ordinary evening football match turned into a heartbreaking tragedy for Meghalaya.
Voice of the People Party (VVP) MP Ricky AJ Syngkon collapsed on the field while playing football with friends at Mawlai Mawiong on February 19, 2026. Within hours, the first-time Member of Parliament was declared dead — sending shockwaves across the state’s political landscape.
Collapsed Mid-Game
Eyewitnesses say Syngkon suddenly fell on the ground during the match. Those present immediately rushed him to Mawiong Community Health Centre. However, due to the unavailability of a doctor at that moment, he was referred to a higher medical facility.
He was then admitted to Dr H. Gordon Roberts Hospital in Jaiaw. Despite continuous efforts by the medical team, he could not be revived. Hospital sources confirmed he was declared dead at around 8:42 PM.
A casual football game had turned into a moment of collective disbelief.
Political Circles in Mourning
Meghalaya Chief Minister Conrad K Sangma expressed deep shock over the untimely demise. In a statement, he described Syngkon as a compassionate leader dedicated to public service, remembering him as a man who served with humility and strong faith.
Deputy Chief Minister Prestone Tynsong, VVP president Ardent Miller Basaiawmoit, several MLAs, and senior leaders rushed to the hospital to offer condolences to the grieving family.
Across party lines, leaders called it a massive loss for Meghalaya.
From Massive Victory to Sudden Goodbye
Syngkon had emerged as a powerful political force in 2024, winning the Shillong Lok Sabha seat on a VVP ticket. He defeated three-time Congress MP Vincent H. Pala by over 3.7 lakh votes — a victory that significantly shifted the political dynamics of the state.
Known for his grassroots connect and vocal stance on tribal rights, governance, and transparency, he quickly became a prominent face in Meghalaya’s political future.
Tadka Take
There is something particularly tragic about a leader passing away while playing the sport he loved. No rally. No hospital bed announcement. Just a football ground and an unfinished match.
At a time when young leaders are shaping regional politics, Syngkon’s sudden death leaves a vacuum not just in Parliament but in the state’s emerging political narrative.
Meghalaya didn’t just lose an MP.
It lost a rising voice.
